Spanking: Getting to the Bottom of Things The term discipline derives from the root word ââ¬Å"discipleâ⬠which means ââ¬Å"to teach.â⬠Spanking has been around since the beginning of time. For decades spanking has been an acceptable form of discipline. Yet not every parent uses spanking as a means to correct their children. Some may say that spanking your child is a form of child abuse, then there are those that may say spanking may be a fitting form of discipline depending on what the child is being punished for. Can both forms of discipline be acceptable? Parents have been entrusted with the incredible privilege and responsibility of shaping their childrenââ¬â¢s behavior in a positive direction. Dr. Jared Pingleton wrote an article for Time Magazine heâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Spanking teaches children not to trust their parents. It hurts the parent-child relationship as fear, anger and resentment build up.â⬠It is very easy to get carried away when one is angry. Often, one thing leads to another and all of a sudden, a line has been crossed. Spanking is no different, and for a parent or caregiver who will inevitably lose her temper at some point, it is a safer practice to avoid corporal punishment all together. Children have a way of knowing exactly what really pushes Momââ¬â¢s, or Dadââ¬â¢s buttons, and they will often continue doing so until they get a satisfying reaction. Unfortunately, what may have started as a simple spanking, easily leads to other unacceptable forms of punishment that could harm the child both physically and emotionally. Depending on the personality and sense of the child, unnecessary and long term harm can result from excessively har sh punishment. Kerby Alvy stated the following regarding corporal punishment in the book Child Abuse: Opposing Viewpoints: ââ¬Å"These methods are used for such purposes as stopping a childââ¬â¢s unwanted behavior, preventing the recurrence of an unwanted behavior, or because the child failed to do something the child was supposed to do.
